Puncture assessment
Repair or replace? Find out on the spot.
Not every puncture means a new tyre. The damage is assessed at your vehicle and the safe option is explained before any work starts.
What gets checked
Where it is matters as much as what it is.
Whether a puncture can be repaired depends on the position and size of the damage and on the overall condition of the tyre.
In the UK, car tyre repairs follow British Standard BS AU 159. In general, only small punctures in the central area of the tread can be repaired. Damage to the shoulder or sidewall means the tyre should be replaced.
Often repairable
Small hole in the central tread
A nail or screw in the middle of the tread, where the tyre is otherwise in good condition.
Usually replace
Shoulder or sidewall damage
Cuts, bulges or holes near the edge or on the side of the tyre.
Usually replace
Driven on while flat
Driving on a flat can damage the tyre’s inner structure, even if the hole itself is small.
Usually replace
Worn or older tyre
A tyre near the legal tread limit, or showing cracking, is rarely worth repairing.
The process
No surprises.
You are told what was found and what it will cost before any repair or replacement goes ahead.
01
Call and describe the problem
Location, registration and what has happened to the tyre.
02
The tyre is assessed
Position, size of damage and overall tyre condition are checked at your vehicle.
03
You choose the next step
Repair where it is safe, or a replacement tyre fitted on the spot if one is available.
Should I keep driving on a slow puncture?
It is best not to. Driving on a soft or flat tyre can turn a repairable puncture into a replacement and affects handling and braking.
Can run-flat tyres be repaired?
Many tyre manufacturers advise against repairing run-flat tyres. Tell us if your car has run-flats when you call.
Will a puncture need a new tyre?
It depends on the position and extent of the damage and the condition of the tyre. The assessment tells you which is appropriate.
